Teacher evaluation with a focus on the NYS Teaching Standards
By Tiffany Giannicchi, Randolph Central School and CA BOCES
As you revisit the breakdown of the composite score in the new teacher evaluation process, set aside the 20pts. state assessment performance and 20pts. local assessment performance for now, and focus on the 60pts. “other measures”. You may still be wondering what the 60 pts. “other measures” looks like. This is understandable because this section of the teacher evaluation process is determined locally by your school district, making it look different in each district. These “other measures”, can consist of classroom observations, portfolios, goal setting, feedback tools, etc. and even though there will be differences from district to district, there is at least one commonality; it opens up a window of opportunity for professional growth!
So what does this all mean? The evaluation process is going to become much more objective; allowing for critical conversations about effective teaching and learning between you and your Principal. You will be evaluated using multiple measures not just classroom observations like in the past. Your Principal will be visiting your classroom more frequently to get an accurate picture of student learning, along with using other forms of evidence to provide you with a fair and accurate evaluation.
In order for your Principal to effectively and accurately assess the evidence collected and then assign a composite score to your annual professional performance review (APPR), he or she will be aligning your evidence to a teacher performance rubric and the NYS Teaching Standards.
The regulations state that all 7 NYS Learning Standards need to be assessed during the year sometime. This is really hard to accomplish during one classroom observation which shows the need for multiple classroom observations and/or other evidence collection.
