LIDAR SUPPLEMENT 11
Listen to the wind with Koheras Lasers
The Koheras line of industrial laser modules from NKT Photonics enables unprecedented wind prediction accuracy in LIDAR systems on wind turbines leading to higher efficiency and longer life time of the turbines.
The wind LIDAR system consist of an NKT Photonics BasiK™ laser source, which in combination with optics and data processing, can measure the oncoming horizontal wind speed and turbulence ahead of a turbine. The wind information can be used proactively
to adjust the blades to increase the wind power and to prevent high wind loads or gusts that shortens the lifetime of the wind turbine due to mech- anical fatigue or that ultimately causes mechanical rupture and expensive downtime.
The Koheras laser plays a key role as the
accuracy of the wind measurement relies on a laser source with unique optical properties such as single frequency operation, narrow linewidth, low laser noise, and high optical output power. Furthermore the lasers must operate in the near infrared frequency band to meet eye safety standards. Koheras fiber lasers are made from mass
manufactured and highly reliable telecom components making the lasers very robust and
completely maintenance-free. Moreover, the laser head can be placed remotely from the control and data processing unit Wind LIDAR systems are typically designed
for CW (Continuous Wave) or pulsed operation. Koheras fiber lasers are designed for CW systems, which have many advantages over pulsed systems in that the wind can be measured continuously with no dead zones and much closer to the wind turbine than possible with pulsed systems. This provides more accurate wind information and is especially critical in more complex wind terrains. See how you can improve efficiency and
lifetime of your wind turbines at
