Case Study Nick Maritz

Nick Maritz is a 58-year-old engineer based in the South African capital of Johannesburg. He gained his fi rst degree from the University of Witwatersrand.

He then went on to complete a four-year course with South Africa’s Association of Arbitrators, which resulted in qualifi cation as a Fellow Member of the Association of Arbitrators.

In conjunction with his 30-year engineering career, Mr Maritz also practises commercial and contract law, generally focusing on dispute resolution, including the negotiation and drafting of contracts, as well as mediation and arbitration.

Q. Why did you enrol on the LL.M? A. Following my legal studies in South Africa, I registered as a member of the International Bar Association and I noticed the course being offered by distance learning. The course content -- due to its strong international focus -- immediately appealed to me as both my engineering and legal careers deal extensively with international contracts and intellectual property-related matters.

Q. Has the course matched your expectations? A. It has exceeded my expectations by far. While I have done a fair amount of self-study in the past -- and enjoy it -- this course in its entirety is the best study experience that I have had.

Q. What has surprised you about the course? A. The comprehensiveness of the online study materials, the ‘real life’ tasks and the feedback from the course supervisors, which is given within a few days of submission. The content of the feedback is superb in quality and to the point.

Q. What has been the most diffi cult part of the course so far? A. Because I am still in full-time employment and I’ve decided to take on two modules at a time, the workload is signifi cant -- but manageable if one is disciplined.

Q. How are you fi nding the online learning experience? A. It has been great, due to the combination of the high quality study material provided with the element of doing some research yourself.

Q. How do you hope to use the degree in the future? A. The high international content of the course is of great value to me, both as an engineering manager working across the globe and as a legal practitioner. In the future, I intend to focus on international dispute prevention and resolution by negotiation, mediation or arbitration.
