Cuttings Extra Rowlands celebrates a century of trading

There aren’t many businesses these days that can boast of 100 years’ trading, let alone two centuries of offering service to customers. But Rowlands Home Hardware in Hampshire can do just that.

The family-run business now has seven stores, four in Hampshire and three acquired this summer in West Sussex, at Midhurst, Petworth and Billingshurst, known as Austens Home Hardware, a business that had notched up 200 years.

Open seven days a week in all seven branches, Rowlands offers a full range of hardware, garden products and pet supplies, sold with the personal touch.

“We want to retain the family feel,” said Adrian Winnicott who runs the stores with his brother Paul, cousin David Wagg and with help from his mother and aunt who still work there.

“If a customer wants something specific, we’re here to help, and to give advice on a home DIY project if it’s needed.”

In 1902 Adrian’s great-grandfather started a construction company in Portsmouth. The retail side of the business began in the 1950s. From the store in Rowlands Castle the firm expanded into stores at Romsey, Emsworth and Alton. Now there are 70 staff working at all seven stores.

Approximately 15,000 stock items are offered but if there is something else wanted by a customer, the friendly and experienced staff will get it supplied to the store.
