THE HORSE GAZETTE trail riding

where the trails are SISTER CREEK RANCH Sister Creek Ranch

is a prime example of beautiful rugged Texas Hill County at its best, with first class horse facilities and approximately 18 miles of trails. The property, owned by Bruce and Beth Johnson, is a working Tennes- see Walking Horse ranch just outside of Boerne, Texas. The Johnson family have kindly opened up their ranch for oth- ers to enjoy just for the day or longer.

When entering Sister

Creek Ranch it is like step- ping into equestrian bliss. The Ranch has coastal fields, the creek, RV/trailer hookups, covered horse pens, paddocks, a beautiful barn, a large arena, a covered round pen, and rental cottages. Bruce and Beth were welcoming and invited us to ride anywhere on the ranch, Bruce also gave us a map of the place. We mainly traversed the northwest side of the ranch.

Watch out for the stock tank just behind the arena, it can get boggy. Carol and her horse figured this out the hard way and enjoyed a cool mud bath, free of charge. Sporting mud and a smile, Carol was ready to ride on. We followed a small trail leading up behind the house next to a shop and several gates. We went through the gate on our right which immediately lead to a second gate giving us plenty of prac- tice opening and closing gates without dismounting. Right after going through the gates we found a water trough which our horses really appreciated. The cows must have liked this watering spot as well because they were still there when we returned. We headed up the fence line which entailed a long and rocky climb in elevation. Boots or shoes are recom- mended for these trails. Just on the other side of the fence, a fully antlered buck allowed

us and our horses to gaze upon him for a few moments. Leav- ing the fence line we followed a trail to an ancient looking spot, called “Pop A Top”, composed of circular rock formations and an old style gazebo with an amazing overlook. The feeling of being in the old west overtook me. This was truly a unique spot perfect for a rest and opportunity to admire the magnificent Texas Hill County. Several hitching posts were present and some stone benches worked well as a mounting block, a welcomed convenience for my not exactly tall friend and her very exactly tall ex- racehorse Arabian, Ace. I recently returned to

Sister Creek Ranch in May with two friends, Carol and Caro- line. As expected Bruce and Beth Johnson were quite wel- coming and provided us with an updated map of the ranch. We had the pleasure of exploring the “PG-13” trails on this visit.

One of the trails has several large logs laying across the path. I highly enjoyed taking Angel over these logs at a walk and then later we jumped them at a trot. There is a pond on the PG-13 trail area where several smaller unmarked trails branch off in all different directions. The pond was a handy way of keeping my sense of direction intact and I used it as a base of reference. A much-welcomed cold front blew in while we were riding, which brought up the horses’ spirits and made the air fresh and cool. It ap- peared as if the skies would drench us at any minute but we kept riding enjoying every moment of the unusually cool Texas weather while it lasted. Once back at the barn, Angel and I worked on crossing the teeter-totter bridge located by the arena and she did it with confidence! What a great note to end the ride on. I rinsed her off, filled up her water bucket,

and stuffed her hay bag. She looked content. While the horses relaxed we were able to explore Sister Creek’s little vil- lage of Kickback Flats. I look forward to staying in one of the adorable guest cottages at the ranch to enjoy the diverse rid- ing opportunities Sister Creek Ranch offers over a weekend. Sister Creek Ranch

trails are fun, provide many natural obstacles to master, and give you a feel of being in the old west when covering rough

Central Texas Hill country by horseback. On my next visit I want to take on the challenging “Jarhead Mountain” trails. For more informa-
