ting and pleasant views for their hospital stay. Windows minimise solar gain and radiant panels in ceilings

can be controlled by the patient by a thermostat and also max- imise space in the room by removing the need for wall radiators. The design adopted allows senior and junior clinical staff to

work in convenient proximity to each other and the circulation patterns separate staff, patients and visitors (other then when they need to meet) so improving efficiency and contributing to patients’ wellbeing. Pembury also houses an accident and emergency centre with

19 treatment rooms for patients, and a further six for resuscita- tion, as well as a minor injuries unit, which includes a dedicated treatment area for children. A few statistics give an impression of the size of the job.

During Pembury’s construction there was 37,973 cu m of con- crete poured, weighing 91,134 tonnes, and 54,495 sq m of form- work fixed. Keeping a hospital of that size and complexity working is

where Interserve comes in. Under the PFI mechanism it con- tributed towards the hospital’s construction and will deliver facilities management worth some £63 million over 30 years, including mechanical and electrical maintenance, estates man- agement, grounds maintenance (including management of the surrounding woodland) utilities management and a helpdesk. Pembury’s design may repay study by builders working on

hospitals in future as it has formed part of a research programme called the Pebble Project, led by an American body the Centre for Health Design, which analyses hospitals to see which design innovations lead to improvements for patients and staff and then promotes these as representing best practice. By the end of the year Pembury will be fully operational and

the old hospitals closed, with patients enjoying the luxury of their own rooms.
