‘True courage’ shown by pair at murder scene

TWO men have been handed a national po- lice bravery award for their efforts to save the life of a man shot by a relative in Maidstone. Mayhem broke out in Quarry Road, Tovil,

two days after Christmas 2009, when Jack Treeby died. His brother Gary also received a serious gunshot wound and a third man was injured in a hit-and-run incident – all the result of a family feud. John Beale lived about 90m down the road

and witnessed part of the action from his home. He was one of the first to arrive at the scene, where he found Jack Treeby lying face up on the pavement with blood by his head and his brother nearby. He administered first aid to both men and applied a tourni- quet. Mr Beale also cleared Jack’s mouth to allow resuscitation. He was joined by MichaelWright, who gave mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while Mr

Please help change Tiny’s luck

A LOVING new home is needed for a timid four-year-old black cat called Tiny following the sudden death of his owner. Maureen Mills, of Maidstone, is appealing

for a new home for the little cat, who is cur- rently being cared for by the RSPCA. Tiny is one of three owned by Mrs Mills’ friend, a widow with no immediate family, who died in June after becoming ill in a town centre supermarket. One cat had to be put to sleep because she

was too old and frail to be rehomed, and the other went to a new owner, leaving Tiny still needing a home. MrsMills said: “My friend’s world was her

Beale administered chest compressions. Ambulance personnel then took over but

their attempts were in vain as Mr Treeby (43), from Rainham, died at the scene. Gary Treeby (39), who had been shot in the

leg, survived the incident. The bravery commendation said CCTV showed that while the two men were at- tempting to save the life of Jack Treeby, the scene around them was chaos and other fam- ily members were hysterical. The statement added: “Both men showed

no regard for their own safety andwere com- mitted to helping save the life of another.” At an awards ceremony, Kent’s Chief Con- stable, Ian Learmonth, said this was an op- portunity to recognisemembers of the public who have “displayed true bravery and courage”. More than 30 police officers were also honoured.

cats. They just lived a quiet life with her. Tiny is quiet and I am worried he is missing his family and may deteriorate. “My friend took him in after he was

found in a shed and the older cat was like a surrogate mother to him. “He is very intelligent and my friend taught

him to retrieve a little silver ball. I think he would be nervous of children but might be happy with an older cat for company.” Tiny is short-haired and has been neutered. Contact Mrs Mills on 01622 762437 or the RSPCA at Leybourne on 0300 123 0751.
