The Architectural Review presents a special monograph, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the work and philosophy of ArchitecturePLB

It’s always a pleasure to bring good architecture to wider attention with this 40th anniversary supplement on the work of ArchitecturePLB. Forming an antidote to the current era’s exhausted repertoire of architectural icons, ArchitecturePLB cultivates a spirit of modesty, materiality, social inclusiveness and human scale. It draws deeply on a core seam of Romantic Pragmatism, a quintessentially English approach that celebrates architecture’s relationship with history and craft, yet is always alert to the contemporary. Rather than applying standardised solutions, its architects relish getting under the skin of each project to explore different options, drawing on a reservoir of shared experience.

Each brief, whether for a new London academy, or a cathedral visitor centre, throws up its own particular challenges. But the consistent aim is to make architecture that has a distinct modern identity, which is capable of standing the test of time and delighting both users and clients. Although it might sound an obvious ambition, it is still a tough one to finesse so elegantly and effectively, especially in today’s uncompromising economic climate.

Decency and delight are the practice’s watchwords and these qualities are evident in an impressive roll call of buildings. But this thoughtfulness does not only extend to making architecture. There is also a clear concern for nurturing and sustaining relationships with clients, construction professionals and staff. The practice has twice been named Employer of the Year by our sister magazine The Architects’ Journal, proof of its commitment to a civilised workplace. From the practice’s roots in Winchester, it has grown to encompass an office in London and now tackles projects beyond these shores. Yet it is anchored by a sense of purpose and shared values that will stand it in good stead for the next 40 years.
