Healing with care Training trends

The spa industry can play its part in bringing a sense of control back into the lives of individuals afflicted with cancer

We asked Joanne Berry from Bellus Academies for an insight into what is currently trending within the spa training sector

C I

How are such cancer patients treated? Well not always too well – as the approach to caring for cancer patients is fairly clinical. Oſten one learns the cold, hard, clinical facts in the doc- tor’s office and then progresses through a series of treatments, surgeries and decisions – again with little comfort or support. Inspiritas in San Antonio is a spa for cancer pa stients, their families, and their caregivers. It wa ts conceived by the START oncology centre – a group of physicians and nurses who were inspired to give better support, care and yes love to cancer victims. At Inspiritas, patients open to traveling around the globe t work in ent countries to boost their career oppor- unities. With worldwide medical tourism being a current trend and growing rapidly, h need or further training in the areas of wellness and hi, Qi Gong and Reiki as well as massage and

and massage therapists to seek out continued, advanced education. Many schools and academies are now offer-

ing advanced training programmes to meet the needs of this rapidly increasing segment, and the demand for highly qualified estheticians and therapists. Te introduction of these courses will further erve and support our industry and contribute o its growth for the future. Some of the trends that I’ve seen include qualified spa therapists wishing to gain international certification such as ITEC or CIDESCO. People are now more can get physician prescribed massage from ther- ap diffists terrained at centres such as MD Anderson. Patients and their families can use the mediation room there without any charge. Te centre also off fers guided imagery, yoga, acupuncture, T’ai C integrative medicine is imperative.

n the past five years, the field of med- ical and specialized esthetics, together with massage and bodywork, have con- tinued to boom, requiring estheticians

ancer is a frightening word. Does it mean the end of life, an impaired life, radiation, chemotherapy or what? Does it mean disfigurement?

healing touch. Patients can come to meditation and exercise classes with no expense. Please note that all of these modalities have been stud- ied in depth by the National Institutes of Health. Yoga has been shown to improve cancer patients’ quality of life and sense of well-being. Patients can meet with an oncology regis-

tered dietitian to learn more about eating for health and healing. Tey can also get assistance with make-up and wig fitting in a warm and inviting setting. Te idea at this spa is to bring a sense of control back into the lives of individuals afflicted with cancer. Tere is no doubt that this spa is truly compassionate. It was founded by two tremendously caring individuals: Dr. Amy Lang, MD and Ms Ginger Kemmy RN, BS. Te START oncologists centre funded this program. Along the way Amy and Ginger teamed up with Lisa Starr of Preston-Wynne fame. At the 9 May meeting of the New York Spa

Alliance, Dr. Anthony Cahan, MD, FAC spoke about “making the breast cancer patient whole”. He spoke passionately about how women with cancer were disfigured in the past by cancer surgery. Tose womens’ survival rate were less than modern surgery with beautiful breast © CYBERTREK 2011

© CYBERTREK 2011 Doctors are now stepping in with weekend

courses to further educate spa therapists on rehabilitation for their patients and how to treat those who have had extensive surgery in their practices. Among the increasingly popular pro-

grammes that are being offered for spa professionals wanting to expand their skills is oncology massage. Te programme aims to give massage therapists a unique offering to work in hospitals and cancer facilities such as infusion centres. Tese courses broaden their skill set and allows them to not only treat and care for cancer patients but also become an asset to their community by providing alterna- tive holistic health care to their clients. Meanwhile, as the medical spa industry

continues to expand its reach, estheticians are looking to be trained in more advanced pro- cedures such as dermaplaning and advanced cellulite treatments. Business training has been extremely impor-

tant in the last two years, especially because of the recession to focus on the sales of retail product and spa services. It’s very important for those students who are just getting into the

reconstruction. Dr Cahan’s patients meet in his spa – like office complex where they have access to wig fitting as well as medical treatments. Note that the objective of these compassionate

physicians – the Start Group, Inspiritas and Dr. Cahan all seek to preserve dignity, self esteem and in women feminine beauty. Cancer is the second largest cause of death

among the over 18s aſter cardiovascular disease. Today mankind possesses the most technolog- ically advanced medical treatments in history. Yet we must heal the whole person, not simply “cure” the disease. Unfortunately, as the popu- lation ages, the risk for heart disease and cancer will rise. Te greatest giſt that spas can give to all clients is caring and healing in a loving ambi- ance. As we know, there are antidotes to these diseases which include nutrition and exercise. We as spas might refer those guests who ask to a physician, personal trainer, gym or dietitian. But we are best at holistic healing and caring. How to help cancer patients? Find your local

spa industry to have a strong understanding of business and how that immediately correlates to good customer service and sales. At Bellus, we’ve implemented this at

a foundation level as there is a belief that if spa therapists have a better understanding of business in general, they are better equipped to obtain a job more quickly and build their client database faster. Later this year we will be launching the brand new “Murad Inclusive Health Curriculum”, giving spa therapists a certification in Wellness. We will be among the first groups of Academies in the USA to become part of the prestigious University of Inclusive Health network. Tis allows us to train our students, alumni,

oncologist office and ask to form a partnership. Ask where to train your licensed therapist in oncology massage and spa treatments. Let’s reach out and heal.

salons and spas in our area in how to treat patients emotionally, topically and internally, a very important part of our industry. We’ve also experienced growth in the number of esthe- ticians enrolling on our 600 master esthetics programme, which is geared to being equiva- lent to five years’ experience in the industry. Tis programme is aimed at already licensed esthe- ticians who understand the need for advanced training to enter the medical spa world.
