Fridays After Five, Fridays Apr 15-Sept 9 — Every Friday during the season, the Pavilion hosts a FREE concert showcasing local and regional talent. Over 65,000 people attend Fridays After Five per season, making it a signature event of downtown Charlottesville. The 2011 season of Fridays After Five, presented by Bud Light, features exciting artists and provides fun for music fans of all ages. Orange County Fair, July 21-24 — An old fashioned county fair in the truest sense; no midway carnival, no high pressure selling activities. Shenandoah National Park 75th Anniversary Celebration, Mar 7-Oct 10 — From the breathtaking views along the Skyline Drive, to the splendor of watching a bear and her cubs, to the thrill of hiking to a mountain summit, it’s hard to leave Shenandoah without being inspired. There are eight counties that actually border the park but twelve are participating in the celebration as a regional effort to increase the public’s awareness of the beauty and culture of the area. Elizabeth Monroe’s 243rd Birth- day, June 30 — the lives and roles of women on the plantation as we celebrate Mrs. Monroe’s birthday. Refreshments, colonial games, a co- lonial etiquette lesson, and a house tour, all with regular admission.


Celebrating America’s Indepen- dence, July 4 — Work and play on a 19th century plantation. Craft demonstrations, colonial games and more. Bring your picnic and lunch with us on the lawn.


Bastille Day, July 14 — the French Connection. le 14 juillet will feature President James Monroe discussing this historic day in French history and the role he played in it. From 1-4pm.


Quartetto Di Sassofoni Acca- demia Concert, Wintergreen at Monticello, July 14 — This per- formance, part of the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival, will feature one of Italy’s outstanding chamber music ensembles, playing a mix of classical and jazz works for saxophone quartet. Co-sponsored by Wintergreen Performing Arts. 7:30pm-9pm, Thomas Jefferson Visitor Center Courtyard. Reserva- tions are required. Behind-the-Scenes-Tours, 2011 — These hour-long guided tours focus on domestic life at Monticello during Jefferson’s retirement years and feature visits to rarely seen rooms on the second and third floors of Monticello. Tours are offered daily at 10:30 am and 2:30 pm. $37; reserved tickets are recommended and are available online at www.monticello.org


Annual Monticello Independence Day Celebration and Naturaliza- tion Ceremony, July 4 — There is no more inspirational place to celebrate the Fourth of July than Monticello, the home of the author of the Declaration of Indepen- dence. Since 1963, more than 3,000 people from every corner of the globe have taken the oath of citizenship at the annual Monticello Independence Day Celebration and Naturalization Ceremony. 9am.
