Malik, Parker to launch Pari Passu Films
BY SARAH COOPER Sales agent Jessica Malik and pro- duction executive Jessica Parker are in Cannes to launch their UK production company, Pari Passu Films (PPF). The company’s fi rst feature will be January, a co-pro- duction with Face Films starring Nora-Jane Noone (The Descent), James Cosmo, Amy Manson and Simon Quarterman. Shooting begins May 16. Other projects on the slate
include a Corin Hardy fi lm and an adaptation of a novel to be co-pro- duced with Parallel Films. Malik started at Capitol Films
in sales and marketing before working at sales company THINKfilm International with Eve Schoukroun. Most recently she worked at Exclusive Film Dis- tribution as senior sales executive. Parker began in production,
going on to work for Isle of Man production and financing com- pany CinemaNX. PPF aims to offer strategic part-
nership opportunities and consul- tation to secure key financing, sales and co-production deals.
Independent on board for Singer-produced thriller
BY WENDY MITCHELL Independent has come on board for sales of UK thriller uwantme- 2killhim?. Momentum Pictures and Alliance Films have rights for the UK and Canada respectively. Andrew Douglas (The Amity-
ville Horror) directs from Mike Walden’s screenplay. The fi lm will shoot starting in July in the UK, mostly on location in Harlow, Essex and Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, plus a week at Elstree Studios.
The story, inspired by a Vanity
Fair article about events in the UK in 2003, is about a teenager who develops an intense online rela- tionship with a girl named Rachel. When Rachel is murdered, he works with her loner brother to avenge her death. They run into further trouble with a secret gov- ernment operation. Bryan Singer had originally
optioned the article in 2005 to direct himself, but he will now serve as a producer. Jack
UK sales and production outfit Fandango Portobello, headed by Janine Gold, has confirmed several distribution deals for Nanni Moretti’s Competition title Habemus Papam. Deals have been done with Le Pacte in France, Cineart in Benelux, Mares Film in Brazil, Seven Films in Greece, Gutek in Poland, Independenta in Romania, Frenetic in Switzerland and Mega Confilm in former Yugoslavia and Albania. Icon Film Distribution has acquired all Australian rights to concert film Mayday 3DNA from Taiwan-based Double Edge Entertainment. The film has also gone to
Deltamac for Hong Kong and Beijing Galloping Horse for mainland China. Shot entirely in 3D, the film features footage from a recent concert tour of Taiwanese rock band Mayday, interweaved with three narrative stories that intersect at the end of the film. The band has a large

BY LIZ SHACKLETON India’s Eros International has acquired international rights to Salman Khan-vehicle Ready, add- ing it to a Cannes slate which also includes Ra.One starring Shah Rukh Khan and Rana with Tamil superstar Rajinikanth. Salman Khan is white-hot in
India after starring in Dabangg, a retro fi lm which was the biggest hit of last year. Ready, directed by Anees Bazmee, is a romantic com- edy also starring Asin. Indian release is scheduled for June 3. Previously announced projects Ra.One and Rana are also
expected to be tentpole titles in India. Ra.One, an SFX-heavy superhero movie directed by Anubhav Sinha, is scheduled for release during Diwali on October 26. Rana is scheduled for world- wide release in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu in 2012. Other upcoming projects on
Eros’ slate include: Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar, Sriram Raghavan’s Agent Vinod, Rohit Dhawan’s Desi Boyz and Excel Entertainment’s Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Eros also recently picked up social drama Bol from Pakistani director Shoaib Mansoor.
