‘We’ll energise a green economy’

MAIDSTONE Greens hope to cap- italise on the decline of the Lib- eral Democrats and their alignment with Conservatives in national government. Badging themselves as the real opposition to the Conservatives, they have high hopes of gaining their first seats on the council. Now that the Lib Dems have shown their true blue colours, there is only one party of opposition in Maidstone, the Green Party. Public anger at the Con-Dem cuts is palpable and, unlike

By Stuart Jeffery, coordinator for the Greens

the 'big three', we stand res- olutely opposed to the cuts es- pecially while the super rich are allowed to avoid tax payments of up to £100bn each year. These cuts are just starting to hit local services, local services that are there to support the poorer and more vulnerable members of society. We will be calling for the £4m

due to be spent on re-paving the High Street to be put into public transport infra- structure; to set up a local energy company;

and to help insulate people's homes. Fuel prices are soaring and hitting peo-

ple hard, yet local councillors are still re- fusing to invest in energy production or energy efficiency. We need to ramp up the campaign to

make our streets safer with 20mph as the default limit on residential streets. We need to support local businesses with planning that favours them and to see the introduc- tion of a local rewards card. We need to ensure that most new homes

are affordable or for the social housing mar- ket, but that our green spaces are protected.

Referendum AT the same time as choosing who represents them in the council cham- ber, the electorate will be asked if the method for select- ing MPs should be changed. A referendum

will be held the same day on the following question: “At present, the UK uses the ‘first past the post’ system to elect MPs to the House of Com- mons.

Should the ‘alter-

native vote’ system be used instead?”

COULD YOU GIVE A CHILD A CHANCE ?

Integrated Services Programme (ISP) is an independent, not-for-profit childcare organisation providing foster care to children with a wide range of emotional and behavioural needs. We have Centres in Kent, London, Bucks and Sussex. We were judged “Outstanding” in our latest Ofsted inspections.

ISP looks after children from many different ethnic and cultural backgrounds including white UK, African, African-Caribbean, Asian and dual heritage. We are keen to recruit carers from similar cultural backgrounds. In addition, we are currently experiencing a high demand to look after: children with various disabilities, children who are involved in the criminal justice system and ‘parent & child’ placed together.

IF YOU HAVE:

• life experience • the ability to work with children or young people and parents

• the ability to rise to the challenge of fostering • patience, determination & a sense of humour • no children under the age of 8 • a spare bedroom • a career change in mind

ISP WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM YOU

We offer full training, 24 hour support and a professional fee of up to £770 a week for specific placements.
