Thanks for saving my life Schoolboy error

A MARDEN fruit farmer, whose life was saved by the Kent Air Ambulance after he was run over by his tractor, was inspired to raise more than £22,000 for the charity with his wife and friends. Michael Lutener (72), of Blackmoor Farmhouse, Sheephurst Lane, was clearing apples from an or- chard in October 2008 when the accident hap- pened. Parish councillor Mr Lutener (pictured) fractured his pelvis in two places and had to be se- dated before being airlifted to the nearest major trauma centre at King’s College Hospital in London. He said: “I’m alive and I wouldn’t be if the Kent Air Ambulance had not been there. When I had my accident I went un- conscious but I was conscious long enough to ring my wife on my mobile phone. “It took the helicopter just three minutes to get

to me and the doctor and paramedic put a pelvic splint on me before we took off. “The surgeon at the hospital asked who put the

splint on and when I said it was the air ambu- lance he said it was the best thing they could have done.” Mr Lutener spent five weeks in hospital before

he was eventually allowed home and has since made a full recovery. He and his wife Jean, with the help of friends

who works for Lambert and Foster, conducted the auction and the 103 lots included speedboat rides, a weekend in France and a stay in Scotland. Mr Lutener visited the helicopter base in Mar-

den to present a cheque for £22,184 to pilot Cap- tain Kevin Goddard, Dr Amy Hughes and paramedic Dave Marshall. Each flying mission costs between £1,500 and £2,000, so the sum raised has helped the crew to potentially save 14 lives. The visit was filmed by Marden History Group, which is putting together footage for a sequel to a film it produced for the millennium when the air ambulance moved to the village.

older friend to speak to the pe- tition as he was under 18, so not old enough under the coun- cil rules. In September, the council agreed to remove the age limit after objections by Anthony. However, the teenager re-

turned to quiz Cllr Garland at March's full council meeting al- leging that the constitution had not been amended to reflect that decision - even though more than 100 working days had since elapsed. Cllr Garland said a new ver-

sion had been uploaded on the website in February. Not so, replied Anthony, reading from the constitution to prove his point. "This has clearly not been sorted out. What is going to happen?" The leader, now more con-

trite, told him: "Thank you for bringing it to our attention. We will look into it." Afterwards, Anthony said the council had made a "schoolboy error" in not updating the con- stitution. "I think I would be in trouble if I hadn't done my homework after 100 days!" Council spokesman Roger

Adley said the changes were made to the under-18 rule on petitions but not to other issues relating to age, which are still subject to national law.
