Regional NEC Users’ Group launched in Australasia

REKHA THAWRANI NEC GENERAL MANAGER

A new regional NEC Users’ Group is being launched in Australasia this month. It is the first in a series of regional groups planned around the world to reflect growing international usage of the NEC3 contract suite. The new NEC Australasia Users’ Group covers

Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica and adjacent Pacific Ocean islands. It is chaired by Warwick Fergusson of Meridian Energy, a major long-term user of NEC contracts in the region (see issue 49).

Other local NEC users include New Zealand

Transport Authority, Christchurch International Airport, local authorities and water utilities. Group secretary is NEC consultant Garry Miller in New Zealand with membership,

registration and administrative support services provided by Raquel Wallace in London.

More responsive to users According to Miller, ‘the NEC Australasia Users’

Group has been established as part of an overall strategy to service NEC3 users within dedicated regions, rather than via London. The regional structure allows us to be more responsive to NEC3 users in their market context and time zone. ‘Members of the new group will get access to

local forums and be able to share information, knowledge and skills to get the best out of NEC3 contracts. Users joining the group will also be invited to a regular series of workshops and seminars. The regional structure means all events will be focused on issues pertaining to the local market.’

Member benefits Members of the Australasia Users’ Group will

Warwick Fergusson (left) and Garry Miller, new chair and secretary respectively of the NEC Australasia Users’ Group

receive a complete set of NEC3 contracts and documents, plus a copy of all new documents when they are published. They will also receive up to 20 copies of the NEC Users’ Group newsletter. Other benefits include sending up to 10 email

enquiries to the NEC helpline each year, and receiving one free delegate place at regional

workshops, roadshows and a regional annual seminar. However, Miller expects the biggest benefit

will be the ability to network with other NEC users in the region.

Promoting wider usage Fergusson says in addition to providing

support and assistance to local NEC users throughout the supply chain, the Australasia Users’ Group aspires to see NEC3 contracts adopted more widely across the region by clients who are willing to take the lead in procuring works, services and supplies via collaborative working arrangements. ‘Our ultimate goal is to play a part in delivering

industry change for the better and to help NEC3 users achieve their objectives in this.’

Events programme The first Australasia annual seminar will

be held in Christchurch, New Zealand on 21 July. NEC roadshow events are also planned in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington during June and July (see NEC Diary on page 8). ●
