PREPARATION FOR LIFE AWAY FROM HOME... (continued from pg 1)

Julian’s now 15 and has spent five summers at Frost Valley. Barry and Susan see growth and development has occurred during the two weeks he’s away from them. Tey remain impressed with the value of the program and the terrific care and attention the small staff-to-camper ratio provides.

With respite Barry and Susan are able to recharge and replenish their internal resources while Julian is at Frost Valley. Tey know his summer camp session is another step toward his independence -- what all parents want for their children. Te assurance gained by knowing their son is thriving without them has been immense. Tey see Julian’s experience at Frost Valley “as preparation for a life independent from us. We are completely confident that when the time comes Julian will be successful at living apart from his family.”

FROST VALLEY DONORS FORTIFY A YOUNG GIRL’S LIFE

For Hailey, a little girl from New Jersey, Frost Valley YMCA has already been instrumental in her upbringing. Unfortunately, Hailey has never known her father, he was out of her life and inaccessible before she was ten months old.

As a single mom, Kacy Gehring needed help providing the right experiences for Hailey. But she wouldn’t always need help. Kacy was going to nursing school and she had high hopes for a better future.

Between working various jobs, college courses, and studying, Hailey was bounced around between the homes of grandparents, friends, and other relatives. Kacy knew it wasn’t ideal, but she also knew that there was something she could do to fortify Hailey’s life: summer camp.

As a girl Kacy had gone to camp where she had resilient, independent, female role models as counselors, formed lasting relationships with other girls, and learned to cook over an open fire. Kacy credits her camp experience with instilling the strengths she relied on to be a single mom for Hailey.

Kacy wanted a resident camp experience for her daughter to make the same gains that she had made as a young person. Hailey needed traditions, a safe environment, and outdoor adventures. Hailey also needed positive interactions with male counselors possessing a strong sense of ethics and the character values that are associated with YMCA camping.

Kacy knew that there would be a time in the future when she could give back but in 2007 she made the call for financial aid forms. For three years, Hailey attended Camp Wawayanda with financial assistance provided by Frost Valley donors. Recently, aſter securing a nursing position, Kacy was able to send Hailey to Pokey-Totem Village last summer using her own resources.

“Each and every year she has come home from camp a stronger and more independent person,” Kacy said. “She’s being prepared for adulthood, learning to do what’s expected in order to get along with others in the community.”

Aſter the summer of 2009, Hailey set a goal for herself: swimming lessons that would help her pass the swim test at Frost Valley’s waterfront. She wanted desperately to play on the water trampoline and jump off the giant, floating iceberg – two things available only to advanced swimmers. Kacy was extremely proud of Hailey for goal setting and for her subsequent achievement of the goal. Te competence brought confidence, making 2010 a banner year for both mother and daughter.
