Winchester College and Christ Church, Oxford; studied law at Corpus Christi, called to the Bar in 1855 and later founded a successful law practice at 11 Hanover square, London; founder and editor of The Ibis, the journal of the British Ornithologists’ Union; secretary of the Zoological Society of London, 1859-1902.
