generate genuine competition. However, in keeping with the wider

mood of the market, it was two pieces of Chinese porcelain – both carrying six- character Qianlong (1736-96) seal marks and of the period – which dominated the results sheet. Underlying the strength of the market, both pieces were damaged. A 14in (35cm) high doucai porcelain

altar candlestick, with a broad drip pan and a bell-shaped base, ranks among a subcategory of ritual wares made to shapes derived from Tibetan metalwork. They include the pair of altar vases or benbaping sold for £400,000 at Duke’s of Dorchester last year. Despite imperfections, this candlestick, enamelled with lotus blooms and scrolling foliage, sold to the London trade at £68,000 (estimate £3000-5000). Yet more was bid for a 10in (26cm)

wine ewer painted in the Ming style with shaped panels enclosing peach and loquat sprays on a ground of scrolling chrysanthemum and peony between bands of stiff leaves and lotus. Ewers of this type make periodic

appearances at auction and it was not too long ago that one could be bought for around £10,000, especially an example such as this with a repair to the spout. Such is the nature of the market that it was bought on behalf of a Chinese mainland collector at £84,000 (estimate £5000-7000). Pictures, including a Cosway miniature

of a midshipman sold at £16,500, were reported in ATG 1978, February 19.
