ALL SET TO FREQ OUT!

As Can main man and The Workshop lead the charge, our very own freak le chic RACHAEL ADAMS turns on and tunes in…

Crackling into life this May is one of the most exciting events to hit London this year. The Short Circuit festival will bring pioneering electronic artists home to one of the first venues to originally host aural freakouts – Chalk Farm’s Roundhouse. Over an epic five- day exploration (14th – 17th May) the venue will pulsate with shortwave snippets and sampled soundscapes performed by the best experimental explorers and the genre’s most influential composers.

Deep in the heart of

the Beeb’s Maida Vale Studios, inside the near- mythological Room 13, those alchemists of sound The Radiophonic Workshop created sounds for radio programmes whose influence would reach far beyond their studio walls. Now, five ex- members; Peter Howell, Paddy Kingsland, Roger Limb, Dick Mills and Mark Ayres are together again to explore Radiophonic’s past, present and future through live performance and

multimedia projections. Originally founded in 1958 with a budget of £2,000, the Radiophonic Workshop was set up to produce innovative soundtracks to accompany the pioneering programmes of the era. Often the sounds required were non-existent (traditionally) so the composers had to look to alternative sources to create the appropriate atmospheres; everyday sounds such as voices or gravel were used as raw material for manipulation, by being played back at different speeds, cut or processed using reverb. Holger Czukay

Czukay who will lead listeners through all stages of his ground-breaking back catalogue with the aid of music and film. Beginning with a homage to controversial visionary composer Karlheinz Stockhausen (with whom he studied in Cologne), Czukay will also perform his first solo album, ’69’s Canaxis, recorded while he was making his first experimental foray into the use of shortwave radio as an instrument in Can. May you’ll be able to bear witness to these processes live and see how they’re still setting the standard for

experimental music. Also performing is legendary Can

Czukay’s own description of his music is “an open-minded conception… a way to master the future” – which is exactly what the Short Circuit festival intends to demonstrate. www.roundhouse.org.uk

GLASTONBURY DVD AT LAST

A shockingly bad quality DVD bootleg has been available for a while, but now Peter Neal’s Glastonbury Fayre Film from 1972 is finally being released by Odeon Entertainment from the original prints. This seminal document of the UK’s counterculture includes performances by Kingdom Come, Melanie, Quintessence, Gong, Fairport Convention, Terry Reid and assorted freaks. There is no extra footage but the DVD features recent interviews with some of the artists that appeared at the Festival and comprehensive sleeve notes by Nigel Cross. Expect a full report in the next Shindig!
