Monkton Elm hosts free grow- your-own weekend
Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre is hosting a Grow Your Own Weekend for anyone interested in finding out how to grow their own food.
It is being held over the weekend of Saturday 23rd April and Sunday 24th April.
Monkton Elm leads the way in grow-your-own weekend
Norma Moore, general manager of the garden centre, at Monkton Heathfield between Taunton and Bridgwater, said: “We will be hosting free demonstrations from 11am until 3pm on both days. Topics include how to get the best from your growbag,
how to plant up a herb pot and how to create a tub full of runner beans that can provide you with beans throughout the summer months, including how to make your own wigwam from canes.
“Grow your own is gaining popularity and people with everything from allotments to patios will be looking to produce food from their outdoor spaces to help with the spiralling costs of supermarket shopping.”
Staff at the garden centre will be on hand during the weekend to offer free advice on what to plant, where and when, whether you’re a beginner gardener or a more experienced one.
Norma added: “We have our own designated GYO area in-store. People are realising that home-grown produce tastes better and is healthier for you. Sales of vegetable seeds are definitely outstripping flower seeds again this year.”
Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre is just off the A38 at Monkton Heathfield between Bridgwater and Taunton.

Somerset Local Food Direct keeps it simple
The idea behind Somerset Local Food Direct is simple. The idea is to provide the best of locally produced food with a delivery service. The company was born out of Somerset Farmers Markets, to extend access to local food. From humble beginnings with a computer in a producer’s kitchen, the company has evolved into an internet based operation offering everything that Somerset food producers can provide. The service is available to all customers in Somerset and some over the border in neighbouring counties.
“We simply provide a convenient and economic way for customers to do their weekly food shopping, avoiding the time and fuel involved in visiting the local supermarket,” said Roger White, manager, “while enjoying the variety, seasonality, freshness and known provenance of local food.”
It appeals to busy people who do not have the time and older people without transport, and especially those who do not enjoy supermarket shopping preferring to spend their time doing something more enjoyable (gardening perhaps).
