Gifts for that special day DIG DEEPER

It’s that time of year again, when we remember Mums of all ages on their special day. And our selection of gifts are not only just right for Mother’s Day but will also fit the bill for a birthday or an Easter gift for a loved one.

Traditional flowers for a special day gift

Back in the 17th century servants and apprentices were given a special day off to visit their mothers every year and the tradition of Mothering Sunday was born. Today we still honour our mothers every year and in the UK nearly a third of us buy her flowers.

This year, instead of a traditional bunch of flowers, Wimborne-based Trehane Nursery is recommending giving a rather special plant, one that will last long after all the bouquets have been thrown away. That plant is appropriately named ‘Mother’s Day’, a deep red azalea.

“We like having such a pretty plant named especially for this special day,” said nursery manager, Lorraine Keets. “‘Mother’s Day’ has semi-double, rosy red flowers and evergreen leaves that turn a reddish colour in autumn, so it makes a good garden plant and should last many years either in the garden or in a container. We are gift wrapping our plants this year and as Mother’s Day falls a little later than usual we hope our azaleas will be in full bud providing a very attractive and long-lasting present.”

Azalea ‘Mother’s Day’ is available in 4 litre pots. Orders can be placed online or by phone before March 28th for delivery in time for Mothers Day.

Trehane Nursery, Stapehill Road, Hampreston, near Wimborne, Dorset BH21 7ND opens Monday to Friday, 8.30am – 4.30pm, and 10am – 4pm at weekends. Call 01202 873490 for more information or visit www.trehanenursery.co.uk
