Time Off - local garden visits Gardens to visit around the Cotswolds during March

Spring is certainly on the way – time to get out and about to see the emerging colour. We advise readers to make contact before embarking on a long journey.

Pear Tree Cottage, Gotherington

Pear Tree Cottage, Gotherington open for one day in March for the NGS

A country garden with a mainly informal air as its name suggests, Pear Tree Cottage is four miles north of Cheltenham, with approximately half an acre that is packed with plants. At this time of year the spring bulbs are particularly lovely, but there is also a pond and a gravel garden,

a wild garden and an orchard leading to greenhouses, herb and vegetable gardens. Grasses and herbaceous borders with summer flowering perennials, trees and shrubs surround the lawns. Open for one day in March for the NGS, owners Mr and Mrs E Manders-Trett also welcome visitors by appointment for private visits between March and June inclusive.

Location: Pear Tree Cottage, Gotherington, Gloucestershire GL52 9EX. Telephone: 01242 674592. Email: edandmary@talktalk.net Open: Sunday 20th March, 2pm – 5pm. Little Malvern Court, Little Malvern

History and a romantic atmosphere make this a special place to visit, particularly in the early spring. Tucked into the side of the Malvern Hills, beside an ancient gabled manor house and an old priory church, it still has its medieval fish ponds, old yew hedges bent into odd shapes and a venerable lime tree. But it also has the sure touch of a top modern designer, as Arabella Lennox-Boyd laid out the gardens in 1982, and since then additional work has been carried out by Michael Balston. Formal areas with pergolas and clipped hedges near the house are softened by the planting schemes, a clipped box hedge set against an equally clipped yew hedge and a lovely

choisya. A series of small lakes are connected by weirs, with mown grass paths, wild flowers and trees reaching maturity. A rock garden is to be found at the top of the first lake, and a damp gravel bed with naturalised primulas and irises. Ten acres of tranquillity to be discovered if you haven’t visited already – and a garden such as this deserves a return visit.
