Team up for Halter Wins Dan and Katie Fox
by JenniferWalker The father-daughter team of Dan and Katie Fox
had a great year in the Performance Halter ring with two of their horses, Intersection (Mr Elusive X A Honey Ofa Page by Page Impressive), a five-year-old stallion, and A Classic Edition (Kids Classic Style x Cooleah By Ima Cool Skip), a beautiful seven-year- old buckskin mare. Together, they garnered several World and
Congress titles. Katie started off with a bang, show- ing A Classic Edition, AKA Cassie, to a unanimous win in Youth Performance Halter Mares at the Ford AQHYA World Championship the very first time she’d ever shown her. In addition, she didn’t have a lot of time to practice with her, because Katie flew in the night before from school. “She does a super job showing horses,” Dan said
fondly of his daughter. “She’s done All Around, Barrels, English,Western, Showmanship, everything. So, Halter is pretty easy for her. She’s on the rodeo team for Texas A & M, where she competes in Barrels.” Although being at school will slow down her showing, she plans to show a little this year, par- ticularly this summer when she’s on break. Katie came back to repeat their unanimous win in theYouth Performance Halter Mares at Congress, and
Father and Daughter
trainer Jack Brizendine took the win with Cassie in the Open Performance Halter class. At the AQHA World, she was Reserve Champion Amateur Performance Halter Mares with Dan and Champion in the Open Performance Halter Mares with Luke Castle. “She’s shown a lot,” Dan said of Cassie. “She
knows when it’s time to shine. She’s fun to show. You don’t have to be on your toes as much as with the stallion, although she likes to play around sometimes. You put her in the ring, she sets up good, uses her ears. She knows it’s show time. The world show was really exciting. Cassie won the Open by one point, so for a while we didn’t know who won. The anticipa- tion was building up all year, so to see that we were right there and we pulled it out at the last minute with the last judge—that was exciting.” Dan concentrated most of his energies on the stal-
lion, Intersection. Jack Brizendine showed him at the Congress and won the Open Performance Halter Stallion class with him. At the World, Intersection was Open Performance Halter Stallions Reserve Champion with Jack and Amateur Reserve Champion with Dan. “It was the first time I’d ever been to Congress,”
Dan reported. “It was an amazing place. It was pretty neat to experience the size and breadth of that show,
and to do so well there was amazing.” As for Intersection, Dan said, “He’s all boy. He’s def- initely a stallion, but if you get him away from other horses he just puts his head down and is really a good boy. I’ve had him for two and a half years, and I real- ly enjoy showing him. Jack Brizendine really got them both in awesome shape to show.” Intersection is the 2010 Open High Point
Performance Halter Stallion and both horses won the Amateur High Point for 2010. Dan plans to hit the road and try for it again this year. He is also looking at breeding each of them. “We’re looking to pull some embryos out of Cassie and hopefully get two colts out of her next year,” he explained. “She’s just gorgeous. She has a nice straight back, weighs 1600 lbs, and is 16 hands tall.“ This will also be Intersection’s first breeding season, and Dan is look- ing forward to seeing what he can produce.
Here’s to a great year for Dan and Katie Fox!
