Hello Shindiggers! As a child in the ’70s I was very aware of The Monkees through their TV show. It seemed to run for an eternity, but Paul Revere & The Raiders were not known at all here in England. In fact, they were one of the first garage bands I discovered 10 years later. “Garage band?” our American brothers and sisters ask, eyebrows raised in confusion. “Surely you mean Top 40?” But no, in the UK the Raiders were never a high profile band, not even in the ’60s. Their The Spirit Of ’67 was a prized discovery, and a record that sat perfectly with The Electric Prunes, The Music Machine, The Chocolate Watchband, The Seeds and so on. For me, and probably all of my British garage-teen kind, the Raiders were very much a “garage band”. Although learning later of their American success,
and how they were one of the top US pop bands of the era… somehow thinking of them as a “cool garage act” still seems right. Our cover story traces the Raiders’ career and illustrates how being a raw Northwest rock ’n’ roll band adored by a young pop audience was not without problems. UK prog-pop lords Caravan; powerpop heroes The
Shoes; post-shoegaze, stoner-psych-rock survivors Sundial; Rubble favourites Granny’s Intentions alongside the rediscovered soul troubadour Lou Bond, garage-teens The Lemon Drops, Yardbirds drummer and Renaissance man Jim McCarty and Frank Zappa round out another fine issue. Hopefully you have grown to like the way we don’t
place all our eggs in one basket. But do we offer enough variety? Or possibly too much? Let me know. Shortly we will be conducting a huge online reader survey, which you will be able to access via our site. There’ll be a prize draw, and you’ll of course be helping Shindig! grow and develop into the magazine that you the readers want. Currently we are working on a number of exciting projects, all of which will be revealed soon. Sit back and enjoy. Jon ‘Mojo’ Mills Editor-In-Chief
