Trend Micro’s new product suite designed with small businesses in mind T
rend Micro’s Worry-Free Business Se- curity 7.0 comes in two editions: Stan- dard, for Windows PCs only, and Advanced, which adds Mac, server and Exchange e-mail protection. Both versions offer a management console, while the Ad- vanced edition also includes anti-spam and data loss protection. Your initial download is a tiny stub that then downloads an installer. Pick your product, choose the installation path and it then downloads the actual program setup, all at 722 MB. Yes, that’s the right number: what you’re downloading is not only a client, but the Se- curity Server, Scan Server and Web con- sole. Be aware that you need substantial disk space on the server for all the bits and pieces. Trend Micro (Trend) recommends 6 GB, but users have reported it using up
to 10 GB. Once you install the components, you’re asked to configure the security agents for servers and desktops. The agent installation will then remove any competing anti-malware products during set up. The Security Server does the heavy lifting, including scanning PCs and blocking malware activity to minimize the impact on the client system’s performance. Trend claims that its Smart Scan tech- nology results in a 51 per cent decrease in memory usage and a 46 per cent decrease in CPU load, compared to other conven- tional methods. It accomplishes this by only loading a mini-agent on the individual client machine.
Reputation services in the cloud feed the system, allowing it to block threats before they hit PCs. View status reports on the Web console and discover what needs attention.
AV-test.org, an independent testing organization, found that Trend performed well at blocking in- coming threats, claiming a 98 per cent threat blocking record, but didn’t do as well cleaning already-infected clients. Worry-Free Remote Manager also al- lows your value-added reseller to monitor and manage the installation remotely if you don’t have the resources to do it in-house. A one-year license of Worry-Free Business Security Standard, the two to 25 seat level, is $37.75 per user, while a one-year license of Worry-Free Business Security Advanced, the two to 25 seat level, is $62.02 per user. The company offers a free 30-day trial.
