5. This Chinese ivory card case, detailed with initial L, is estimated at £300-400 at Tamlyn Salerooms’ November 16 auction in Bridgwater, Somerset. The story goes that a relation of the vendor was a wealthy and well connected lady who was part of a sewing group that included Queen Mary, wife of
George V. The card case was supposed to have been given to this lady by Queen Mary – the recipient’s name was Lillian hence the cartouche is engraved with a scrolling L. The quality of the case would suggest that the story is true, as does a postcard sent from Buckingham Palace also included in the lot. Contact 01278 445 251
