“Our campaign raises the most per capita of any United Way campaign in Canada,” says Diane Shannon, executive director of the Fort McMurray United Way.

Last year, the United Way campaign in McMurray raised $5.4 million. This year’s campaign, which wraps up in November, has a goal of $5.678 million.

“We do have some giant corporate partners here that are in the energy field,” Shannon says. “Giving to the United Way is part of the culture on some of these oilsands sites.”

During the last campaign, Syncrude and its employees raised $1.3 million for the

cause. Suncor and its employees raised $1.7 million.

Twenty-five per cent of the funds raised through the Fort McMurray United Way come from corporate donations — the most of which are oilsands companies. Several oilsands companies match employee donations to the cause.

“We definitely value our corporate partners in the oilsands,” Shannon says.

Nexen is another energy company that re-invests literally million of dollars in the communities where it is based.

Major contributions include $1.5 million for the new Bill Woodward

School in Anzac and scholarships for post-secondary education in the Wood Buffalo region; $1 million for future post-secondary scholarships and $150,000 for an indoor running track at Keyano College. The company contributed a whopping $11.4 million to communities in 2009.

In addition to such gifts provided by energy companies, Albertans benefited by $12.2 billion in oil and gas royalty revenues in 2008-2009. According to the Canadian Centre for Energy Information, about 70,000 people are directly employed in Alberta's energy sector.
