The Lord Lieutenant’s Cadets

The Presentation of Badges to the Lord Lieutenant’s Cadets was made at The Derbyshire Army Cadet Force (Mercian Regiment) County Headquarters on 20th October 2008. Cadet Warrant Officer M G Ireland Air Training Corps

Before they received their badges, each gave a brief outline of his/her cadet career and plans for the future. Army Cadet Sgt Sarah Shergold explained that she had joined the Long Eaton Detachment at 13 years old:

“I went with a neighbour to the detachment for something to do” she said “and have never looked back since. I am currently in the 6th form studying media, double ICT, general studies and sociology and I also work part time as a dispenser at a pharmacy. My other main passion besides the cadets is I am involved on a national committee for youth forums and parliaments for under 19s. This

This one time at

Band Camp Cadets from B Company have had the opportunity to “suck, band and blow” as many instruments as they can lay their hands on. The County band, headed up by Bandmaster Pete Ward, set up two sessions at Chesterfield to encourage Cadets from B Company to pick up an instrument. The sessions, which were run in September, went down very well and the Cadets really got to grips with what they were being taught. Hopefully, there will be other opportunities for B Company to practise their new skills in more sessions set up in the area.

allows me a say in projects relating to my local town, debates in the House of Lords are two items I have been involved in. My future plans are to take a gap year to travel to Australia or South America, buy myself a car before going to university where I would like to study to become a teacher. I’ve been able to achieve many things since being an army cadet, marched inside the gates of Buckingham Palace to witness the Changing of the Guard by the Regiment I am badged to, watched a Passing Off Parade at RMA Sandhurst, attended four annual camps one being to Germany, achieved a Distinction in my BTEC; I still enjoy being a member of the ACF today as I did when I first joined. The ACF has given me stacks of confidence, all that I have achieved I must give thanks to all the people in the ACF that have given me time and effort to put me where I am today especially my DC for she has boosted my confidence to the level I am today; without her effort I definitely wouldn’t be stood here today.”

The Lord Lieutenant presented a brooch to SSI McKay in recognition of her achievement in gaining the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award; SSI McKay will be invited later to one of the royal palaces to receive her certificate from a member of the royal family: well done.

WO2 (CSM) J D Grant Chesterfield cadets handed over a cheque for £700 to Colonel Jack Tarr OBE, the Regional Director of the Army Benevolent Fund (ABF) in the East Midlands. The money was raised through a sponsored swim which was organised and run by Cadet Sergeant Natalie Allan and Cadet Corporal Jenny Clinton. The cadets from Chesterfield were determined and focused to achieve their target that they swam an extra 11 miles making a total of 37 miles. The money raised for the ABF will be well spent on the comfort and recuperation of injured Soldiers and their families.

A BIG cheque Matlock Remembrance

Day Parade 2008 Twenty four Derbyshire Army Cadets paraded at the annual Remembrance Day Parade in Matlock. Cadets from the Detachment on Hurst Rise, Matlock, have been practising for weeks for the parade through Matlock Town Centre in recognition of those who lost their lives fighting for our Country. The parade was attended by the County Commandant, Col Paulucci, and the Honorary Colonel Derbyshire ACF, Col Diane Jeffrey. “The Army Cadets looked very smart and well turned out: it is so good to see so many on parade” said Lt Jason Kitson, Training Officer of A Company. The Cadets also helped to collect for the Poppy Appeal, raising over £300 with teams in the Town Centre and Sainsbury’s.
