Maine Coastal News FREE Padebco Launches a Beautiful 27-foot Walkaround

ROUND POND – The hull most often used on the coast of Maine is the round bilged lobster boat hull, which over the years has been used for commercial and for pleasure. One builder who has strayed from this is Bruce Cunningham of Padebco Custom Boat of Round Pond. Recently he launched a beautiful 27-foot day boat, which is perfect for the discerning boat owner, for a customer from Cape Elizabeth/Florida.

This boat came about because one of his former customers, who had a Padebco 23½, wanted something larger, that could be easily handled, and that he could walk up around the bow and grab a mooring without getting up on the foredeck. What he was looking for was a walkaround day boat. Cunningham added, “He had some ideas, I have some ideas and we put them all together and this is what we came up with.” It really was not that easy. Cunningham explained, “The problem is if you make the walkaround to wide you don’t have any room in the pilot house left. However, by raising the deck up higher in the hull, but not to the point that it ceases to be a walk around, you can utilize the whole width or beam of the boat and you can get a decent walkaround. From the sheer down on the average it is probably about 18 inches to the walkaround deck. Also the bow rail goes all the way back to the house so when you’re walking around the bow rail is right by your hand.” Over the last several years Padebco has

been powering their boats with jet drives. “This one has an I/O unit, which was never used before with a jack shaft with a 315 Yanmar diesel hooked up to it,” added Cunningham. “The shifting is done hydraulically, so it is very smooth shifting.” Cunningham said after sea trials, “It handles very well and it is speedy. If you get pot warp in it you can just lift the propellers out of the water, unwind the pot warp, drop them back in and go merrily on your way. You don’t have to go overboard as you do in some boats.”

This is the twelfth 27-footer they have built to date, however, this is the first that is a walkaround with a cuddy cabin and shelter. All others have been either center consoles with some amenities or cruisers with a normal forward deck and full amenities below. For those that are advancing in years, and want the added security of a walkaround and bow rail this is the perfect boat.

One will also be pleased with her accommodations. There is a V-berth, an electric Vetus head between the berths, a refrigerator and hanging locker below. The head is set up so you can pump through the deck at a pump out station or through the bottom when you are offshore. Since this is strictly a day boat the owners opted not to have a stove or microwave.

Up forward on the front of the cuddy is seating, back aft there is a full-width stern seat, and amidships there is fore and aft

seating over the engine. The deck is all teak and took Cunningham about 90 hours on his hands and knees to do.

She has a customized stainless steel pipe top that was built by Mobile Marine Canvas. The cushions were made by Fortune, Inc. and are used on the seats and double berth.

As for speed she tops out at 34 knots and cruises nicely between 20 and 25 knots with minimal fuel consumption.

This winter they will be building another 27 walkaround for a customer from Round Pond. She will be a little different in that she will be powered with a Volvo inboard/

outboard gasoline engine in the stern. This engine is a lot lighter than the diesel, which allows it to be mounted in the stern. It will also give the owners more room in the cockpit. This one will also have a cut out in the transom so you can walk out on the swim platform.

They also have a new 23½ to build and several repair jobs. One of the repair jobs is on a fiberglass Herreshoff Rozinante. She was never finished inside, they just stepped the mast and went sailing. They now would like a few more creature comforts and want the interior finished out.
