SailMaine Soiree Auction to Benefit Local Sailing Program

PORTLAND – Community sailing program SailMaine has been helping sailors young and old get out on the water to enjoy educa- tional, recreational, and competitive sailing opportunities since 1996 on Casco Bay. The Third Annual SailMaine Soirée silent auction and Leafer’s Last Leg regatta will take place on Saturday, October 16, and act as the kick- off to an annual appeal designed to raise funds in support of the myriad community programs of SailMaine.

SailMaine provides the facilities, coach- ing staff, and administrative support for five high school sailing teams that compete at the regional and national level. The organization also hosts educational and recreational pro- grams for local college students, junior sail- ors aged eight to 18, adults, and Special Olympics athletes. As part of the mission to make sailing accessible and affordable to all, most programs are subsidized and costs to sailors are kept as low as possible. In addi- tion, all students under 18 are eligible for scholarships, and the Special Olympics pro- gram is offered at no cost to over a dozen athletes annually.

To help support these and other emerg- ing programs, area high school students, youth and adult participants in the SailMaine learn-to-sail programs, and seasoned sailing veterans of all ages will face off in the third

annual Leafer’s Last Leg sailing regatta, hosted by SailMaine and run by local volun- teers. Students and local sailors of all expe- rience levels are invited to race on courses in Portland Harbor in either their own boats or in SailMaine’s own fleet of boats, available on a first-come, first-served basis. The regatta provides an opportunity for sailors of all ages to enjoy time on the water deep into the fall and offers a fun and unique format. Teams comprising five sailors, split between two SailMaine boats, can join forces as desired, while others may race individu- ally, on their own J24, Etchells, or Laser. All sailors compete for trophies presented at the SailMaine Soirée, a benefit and silent auction hosted at Portland Yacht Services from 7:00 to 10:00 in the evening following racing. Funds for SailMaine will be raised through regatta entry fees as well as ticket sales for the SailMaine Soirée, and all pro- ceeds from the silent auction hosted that evening will go to SailMaine. The SailMaine Soirée is open to the public, and advance tickets are available for purchase. The Soiree will be bigger and better than ever this year with live music, fantastic hors d’oeuvres and auction. To purchase tickets, go to www.sailmaine.org or contact events direc- tor, Sarah Helming at sarah@sailmaine.org (preferred) or 650-2085.
