The Small Woods Association aims to promote small woodlands nationally, as well as providing members with essential information. SWA works with projects and initiatives, hosting some and working in partnership with other organisations. Coed Lleol is a partnership project which aims to reconnect people and woodlands in Wales. The Green Wood Centre

looks to revitalise the coppice and greenwood sectors through courses and events. Herefordshire Sustain Project works in partnership with some 30 organisations to create a replicable model for sustainability in the UK. The Woodlands Initiatives Network facilitates the work of some 150 woodland initiatives in the UK, working with the FC, CA and the SWA.

"It's about managing change in our woods"

With snow on the ground as I write, new leaves feel a long way away, but welcome anyway to the Spring Smallwoods! You will find with this mailing a listing and booking form for members' events for the first half

of 2010. Hopefully there is something of interest for everyone, and I hope to meet many of you at these events. I am planning more for the second half of the year, including additional home user chainsaw courses – information will be supplied with the April Smallwoods. Just as we go to print the Read

report, Combatting Climate Change - a Role for UK Forests was published. This independent study, commissioned by the Forestry Commission, looks at how UK woodlands can mitigate the effects of climate change, and how we must adapt our management strategies and, more fundamentally, how we look at our natural environment – managing change rather than preserving and restoring. In the next Smallwoods we will take a closer look at the report and the messages it contains for small woodland owners and managers. This autumn Small Woods’

Heartwoods project began operation in the West Midlands, offering advice and grant assistance to all involved in the woodfuel supply chain in that region. From April 2010 the Project Manager Nick Maskrey will be available to answer queries from all members on all aspects of woodfuel production, processing and marketing.
