Nothing More Important than Safety

t this time of year, most camp directors are busy hiring their final staff members, preparing for staff orientation, trying to fill their remaining camper spots, ensuring their facilities

are in tip-top shape, and doing everything else they can during their waking hours to get ready for that first day of camp. With everything on their mind, the one aspect of this summer

they can ill afford to lose sight of is the safety and security of their campers, not to mention all of the staff members and visitors who will be coming and going throughout the summer. As you read this issue of Canada Camps, you will see that

many of the articles fall under the theme of safety and security. On page 16, Melodie Bissell from Winning Kids talks about the impor- tance of background checks and pre-employment screening; Safe Water on page 18 discusses the need for camps to supply safe drinking water for everyone that comes onto their respective site; and on page 20, Pearl Rimer from Boost Child Abuse Prevention & Intervention explains why every camp should take some time to teach their staff about child abuse and what they need to know about dealing with certain situations that may arise. For those that may not know, KAP Publishing, the publisher of

Canada Camps magazine, also publishes two magazines in the security industry. One of them (Security Matters) focuses on help- ing Canadian busineesses improve the security of their data, facili- tiees and staff, and the other (Security Products Canada) is designed to provide security and alarm company operators with the latest industry news and product and technology information. As an 11-year veteran of the security industry, I have come to

realize the importance security plays in a business. More specifical- ly, that security is no longer simply a cost centre, but a business enabler that can help companies differentiate themselves from their competitors, increase staff productivity and efficiencies, and allow businesses to network with employees and customers around the world in a safe and secure fashion. There is nothing more important this summer (and every sum-

mer for that matter) than campers having a safe and healthy expe- rience. By taking the necessary precautions, by implementing sound polices and procedures and by training your staff on most, if not all, of the situations they may be confronted with during the summer months, you will most definitely be providing a camp experience worth remembering.
