Gardener’s Cuttings RHS urges kids to get their grown-ups growing

The Royal Horticultural Society has launched an initiative that will bring teachers, pupils and local adults together to develop school gardens.

The RHS Campaign for School Gardening, ‘Get Your Grown-ups Growing’ will see primary schools planning gardening events at which parents, grandparents and other adults can join the children and have fun in the garden. Registration is now open and teachers signing up will receive a free RHS pack, including how-to guides and activity ideas, as well as seeds, posters and stickers. Every school that takes part will have the opportunity to win some fabulous prizes including woodstone planters from Marshalls plc.

Kids gardening – the RHS want gardening kids to ‘convert’ their parents

As the UK’s leading gardening charity, the RHS has been running its Campaign for School Gardening since 2007. Almost three million children have already benefited, learning to care for the wider environment and lead healthier lifestyles. But many schools are still without a garden, and those that do have them need the support of their local community to keep them growing.

Gordon Seabright, Acting Director General, RHS, says: “Teachers involved in the Campaign for School Gardening, and our own research, tell us that gardening brings out the best in children, socially, emotionally and physically. It introduces them to the idea of growing their own food, caring for wildlife and learning outside the classroom."

A survey has revealed green-fingered Brits spend on average £102.30 on their garden each year with Bristolians spending the most at £149.80 and Aberdeen residents spending the least at £59.05. A spokesman for the survey said; “With a hot summer ahead of us, no matter what you get up to in your garden, it has never been a better time to invest in your garden to make the most of the sunshine. The survey also found that 39 per cent of those surveyed admitted to being jealous of their neighbours’ garden.

Garden lovers head for the Palace

Fancy getting a group together for the Palace?

A tour of the garden at Buckingham Palace sounds like a value- for-money day out - if you can get together a group of 15-25 people. Garden lovers will follow in the footsteps of monarchs this summer when Buckingham Palace throws open the gates to its garden and the doors to its state rooms.

Following a visit to the plush rooms, groups will tour the garden, to include a talk on the history and use of the garden.

The 45-minute tour will take in the famous herbaceous border, the summer house, rose garden and palace tennis court where King George VI and Fred Perry rallied in the 1930s.

"For over 200 years the garden has been used by the royal family for celebratory events and official entertaining, including the Queen's annual garden parties," said a palace representative. The combined visit and tour from 28th August to 1st October costs up to £23 per person from groups of 15 to 25.
