Page 6. MAINE COASTAL NEWS February 2010 LASH ADDS A LITTLE MORE ABOUT BOATBUILDING

The eastern-rigged dragger NAUTILUS at Morse Boatbuilding Co., Thomaston.

In the last issue we discussed more pho- tographs from the “Atlantic Fisherman” col- lection from the Penobscot Marine Museum at Searsport. The articles was based on the memories of Winfield Lash of Friendship. Unfortunately, I had not finished transcrib- ing the interview so we will conclude with more insights into the boat building industry around Friendship.

One interesting comment made was the well known designer Albert Condon created the basic design for many of the sardine carriers that were turned out in the area, namely at Thomaston.

We talked about the Morses, who moved from Friendship to Thomaston in the early 1900s. Winfield’s father, Robert Lash, operated a coastal schooner, which made ran between Portland and the Thomaston. Wilbur and Jonah Morse built together but there was a difference in how they wanted to build. Wilbur wanted to build using steam bent frames and Jonah wanted to use sawn

frames. The difference caused a split and Robert Lash moved Jonah to Damariscotta where he built a number of vessels. Robert Lash sailed on the MRYA J. WOOSTER from 1922 until 1934. He then sailed as master of the LILLIAN from 1934 until World War II started. At that time he became an officer of the Portland fleet. Another boatbuilder discusses was Rockland Boat. Some can remember the fine lobster boats turned out by the Gronros’, but they also built many larger boats, like the CATHERINE & BEVERLY.

How about the ETHEL M., which was built by Rufus Condon, and owned by Tom Delano. This brought on a discussion of the builders in Hatchet Cove, Friendship. Of course this is where Winfield Lash built, but there was also Sid Carter, Jim Murphy and Rufus Condon. Records show that Condon built from the early 1900s to mid-century. Wesley Lash added, “He was Albert’s uncle and he was quite a craftsman.”
