14 South West Building & Construction
March 2010
MIKE WYE & ASSOCIATES LTD
Building conservation school
A BUILDING Conservation School for listed property owners will be held in the South West on Friday, March 26.
It is well known that listed
buildings require materials and repair techniques different to those of modern structures. It is not just that owners and
builders may be committing a criminal offence if they don’t use the proper materials and techniques, they may also be causing major long-term damage to the property. In an effort to help people
avoid common pitfalls, Mike Wye & Associates Ltd has joined forces with the Listed
Property Owners Club to offer free guidance in a series of lectures on March 26. The day covers important topics such as: *insurance
*the use of lime
*understanding dampness *natural paints *insulation *VAT
*planning.
Each listed property owner will receive a free and comprehensive information pack at the end of the day. Although the presentations are free of charge, refreshments and a lunch are being supplied and this is charged at a cost of £8 payable in advance. Contact Mike Wye & Associates for full details. Tel: 01409 281644 or web

Traditional properties need particular care.
The demand for traditional materials has mushroomed in recent years - partly due to better information and the increase in listed buildings with the resultant demands of conservation officers to maintain buildings correctly. Many older properties
constructed traditionally without cavity walls have suffered in recent generations, some with catastrophic results, due to the inappropriate use of modern materials. The term to keep in mind is
‘like for like’.
So if a property had oak lintels and lime mortar when originally built, it would be most unlikely that a concrete lintel and cement mortar would be best for repairs and renovation. Mike Wye & Associates not only supplies materials but also educates and trains people through DVDs and training to help owners, builders and other professionals from making costly mistakes. Mike and his staff offer guidance about techniques and materials. For more details on training courses offered, visit
