A FLYING START FOR EARLY LACTATING COWS Animal Health ! Hygiene
Maximising appetite and dry matter intake in early lactation is the key
to healthy and highly productive cows.
A period of negative energy balance occurs in early lactation when a
cow’s appetite lags behind the increased energy and nutrient
requirement for milk production - so she milks off her back to
maintain yield.
But excessive mobilisation of body fat can result in ketosis and fatty
liver and lead to an increased risk of milk fever and other metabolic
disorders. For optimum performance and health, this period of
negative energy balance should be kept as short as possible. MINERALS
lA case of sub-clinical ketosis or acidosis typically costs £50 per
cow. DENIS WITTER
lA clinical case costs £200 - £300 per cow.
Optimum helps improve energy balance in early lactation by
providing a source of rumen by-pass energy for the cow and We
stimulates forage intakes and digestion by increasing both the
number and activity of rumen microflora through the provision of a stock:
concentrated source of sugar.
Whilst licking stimulates saliva production, Optimum also contains
other proven buffers, including live yeast, which helps prevent the
build up of lactic acid that can cause acidosis. This stabilises rumen
pH within optimum limits and reduces the risk of digestive upsets, OPTIMUM DAIRY FEED LICK
ensuring feed intake is maximised to support optimum health, fertility
and lactation performance.
Typical inputs - 150/200g per cow per day. Try the PINK 80 kgs Tublyx - it improves
COW Health, Fertility and Performance.Winter 08/09
Results on farm very encouraging dry matter increases of total diets
up between 9% - 13% resulting in increased milk yields &
improvements in fertility and herd health. For information please telephone us on
In pre-launch trials:
l10-12 dairy units saw a 1-2 litre increase in yield at a Crystalyx 01270 252001
input cost of 15-18p, giving a typical profit of 10p/cow/day.
lAll trial farms reported an improvement in bulling activity. Yew Tree Farm, 30 Main Road, Weston
