47th annual texas state 4-h horse show

The 47
th
annual Texas State 4-H Horse Show was held July 25 – August 1, at Taylor County Expo
Center in Abilene, and it was hosted by Texas AgriLife Extension Service of the Texas A&M System. The event
drew 780 4-H riders, ages 9 to 18 and representing 143 counties, for 7 days of competition and 2,218 entries
with 989 horses in 36 events. Many families return to the show year after year, even after their own youngsters
“age-out” of 4-H, with some families now into their second and third generations of contestants.
This was the show’s 25
th
consecutive year in Abilene, and the first year of a new 5-year contract which
will keep the show in Abilene through 2013. The city is centrally located, and hotels, restaurants, and businesses
in the area offer tremendous hospitality to exhibitors and their families. Taylor County Expo Center offers the
required number of stalls needed and three covered arenas which allow the event run smoothly and quickly, and
the air-conditioned coliseum is a definite plus.
For the ninth year, Wrangler, via efforts of Bill Taylor of Abilene, put together $4,200 in scholarships
• General Medicine
for 4-H contestants in 6 divisions at the show. • Surgery • Reproduction
For the seventh year, Cargill Animal Nutrition, known throughout the state for the major brand names
of ACCO and Nutrena, was Education and Awards sponsor for the Texas State 4-H Horse Show
