Restoration
The world premiere of Restoration, written by and starring award-winning
playwright/actress Claudia Shear is currently being performed at the La Jolla
Playhouse. Inspired by the actual restoration of Michelangelo’s iconic master-
piece, The David, Restoration is the passionate, funny and moving story of a
woman who spends a year in the shadow of a masterpiece and uncovers herself
in the process. In her research for this production, Shear traveled to Florence
several times, meeting with experts from some of the most respected restora-
tion centers in Italy and also interviewed the woman who actually performed
the statue’s 2004 restoration. She was also given exclusive access to The David in
order to become immersed in the world of the play.
Restoration is currently playing through July 19 at the La Jolla Playhouse.

Noises off
In 1970, British playwright Michael Frayn was watching a production of a farce
he had written about a dinner party in which two actors played all the roles. As he
was watching from the wings, he realized that the comedy was actually funnier
from that perspective and decided to write a farce set entirely backstage. Thus
was born the 1982 classic Noises Off, which follows a series of actors backstage
as they perform an awful sex comedy titled Nothing On. Frayn’s comedy was an
instant hit and this month, Cygnet Theatre will officially begin its new season by
bringing to town the wildly funny and Tony Award-winning production. Artistic
(l to r) Anthony Bollotta, Jorge Luis Abreu and musical director Rayme Sciaroni
director Sean Murray will direct the play, which will be held at Cygnet’s Old Town
theatre stage.
