EEra of Changera of Change
Here are excerpts from the transcript of the Coun-
cil of Historically Black Colleges and Universities Engi-
neering Deans round-table discussion.The moderator
was William A. Brown, Sr., PE, HAIA, executive vice
president, Page Southerland Page LLP.
WILLIAM BROWN: The question I’d like to start off with is what special skills do HBCU
graduates have that will help rebuild America?
DR. V. TRENT MONTGOMERY: Our [Alabama A&M] students come from commu-
nities that have problems with environmental justice. They bring an understanding of
what the average person goes through in this country to the table, and fuse engineer-
ing into that mentality and set of solutions.
DR. LEGAND L. BURGE Jr.: One of the things that I have noticed about our [Tuske-
gee University] students is they have always been challenged, and because of [that]
they know how to find solutions outside the box. Most come with a transformational
attitude, and that’s different from what you’ll have in a majority school — thinking
Dr. V. Trent Montgomery
the traditional way of doing things is going to work. The transformational attitude

to teach and we put it in things like ethics and senior design courses.
