John’s Bay Boat Company Launches #60, SAND DOLLAR III.
By Maine Coastal News
SOUTH BRISTOL – There are almost a
hundred boat builders in the State of Maine,
and only a few of them build in wood. One
of the premier wooden boat builders
anywhere, either commercial or pleasure, is
John’s Bay Boat Company of South Bristol,
who launched there sixtieth boat, a new 41-
foot split wheelhouse lobster boat for Scott
Dugas of Yarmouth named SAND DOLLAR
III on 29 November.
The design is a little different than
others he has done in the past. She is based
on the designed of the 42-foot SARI ANN,
owned by Vance Bunker of Metinicus, and
launched in 2006. SARI ANN sailed a little
higher than Peter Kass, owner of John’s Bay
Boat Company, liked, but worked well for
Bunker who is relatively tall. Kass flattened
out the horn timber about two inches in
order to get her to sail flatter. This meant
that the last two station moulds and the
transom were changed slightly. Since Dugas
is not as tall as Bunker, they raised the
platform two inches and lowered the sheer

inches, but with the addition of the toe rail
