Pony Tales

Something transpired
between this child and this
pony in a split second of
time. She put her hand on
his neck and said “I won’t let
anything eat you, I promise!”
And then she whispered
something to him which
must have been in a secret

language. The pony put his
head down, his tail fell flat
and he simply walked away
waiting to receive his next
instruction in class.
Back in the stalls, she
patted my leg and, in her 7
year old wisdom, she said
“Didn’t you just feel sorry
for Raz? He was so afraid,
but I told him he didn’t have
to run, I would save him.
And guess what Gramma?
He knew that already! Can
you take my picture so I

never forget him?”
I did take that picture,

and when I tucked her into
bed that night I found her
4 sleeping peacefully holding
on to the computer print
out of that pony, her new
best friend, tightly clutched
in her hand.
