Antigua had a particularly tough year in 2009, with arrivals from
the UK down by a fifth, but the tourism authority is optimistic
it will reach 2006-07 levels again this year. As well as the ever-
popular Antigua Sailing Week, the island hosted the Caribbean
600 race for the first time this year. November saw the launch of
Nonsuch Bay, a collection of cottages, apartments and villas close
to English Harbour, while December saw the reopening of

Antigua’s iconic Jumby Bay. The Rosewood resort closed in
summer 2008 for a $28-million renovation project, adding a new
Sense spa, two new restaurants and redesigned guestrooms. “It

Barbados fared slightly better than Antigua, with UK arrivals
around 13% down year-on-year. The 2010 ICC World Twenty20

Fine dining continues as a key theme, with the successful
Gourmet Card, launched last year, making a comeback and
Barbados remains the only Caribbean island to have a Zagat

to bring its five properties more clearly under the Elegant Estate – a six-room boutique hotel by the luxury chocolatier
