Nominations Sought for Host of
2009 Educational Ambassador
T
he ASA Committee on International Relations in Statistics is offering the
opportunity for a developing country to apply to become the host of the
2009 Educational Ambassadorship Program.
As part of an increasing effort by the ASA to reach statisticians worldwide, the
Committee on International Relations in Statistics began the program in 2005 to
recruit a series of educational ambassadors from foreign countries.
Within the program, an ambassador is chosen each year to attend two succes-
sive Joint Statistical Meetings. At the first, the educational ambassador attends a
Continuing Education course in an emerging area of research not presently studied
in the ambassador’s country. The ambassador then returns to his or her country and,
throughout the next year, teaches the new subject matter to a class of no fewer than
10 students. At the second JSM, the educational ambassador presents an invited ses-
sion to summarize his or her experience. Finally, the ambassador returns to his or her
country and contacts at least three neighboring countries for a presentation of his or
her class, either in person or via a webinar.
For more information, contact Demissie Alemayehu, chair of the ASA Committee
on International Relations in Statistics, at alemad@pfizer.com or Martha Aliaga, ASA
director of programs, at martha@amstat.org.
