WET YOUR LINE?

FISHFINDER COME INTO PLAY?

HOW DOES YOUR

WHERE DO YOU

Inshore in coastal California, mostly for halibut and bass or whatever else swims by.

It locates structure for me. Halibut are near structure; bass are in, above, or sometimes on the edge. Structure is the hotel where

everything hangs out.

WHAT YA GOT?

A Humminbird Matrix

17. I’ve had it for three years; it’s done very well from Central California to Baja.

HOW’S IT RIGGED?

The transducer is

in the hull. I use a waterproof box for

my battery, placed far up front to help the kayak plane better. I

run the wires through the deck.

BUILT-IN GPS?

DO YOU GO FOR

Definitely. Once you have all your spots marked you can go right to them.

In the Strait of Juan de Fuca. I fish for

salmon, mostly kings.

I use it to find the bait balls where I drop my mooching rigs. I couldn’t do it effectively otherwise. If you can’t find the bait you’re just fishing blind.

A Humminbird Matrix 17, the best combination of value and performance. I don’t want to spend hundreds on something that can get dunked or broken.

I don’t do anything

fancy. The fishfinder is on a RAM mount.

I run the wires under the hatch rim and keep my battery

rolled up in a dry bag. I Goop the transducer inside.

That’s something

I’m wrestling with. Marking fishing spots would be much easier.

High Island, the Middle Coast, and Port Aransas.

In summer I paddle out to the oil rigs.

I use it to locate bait in deeper water. The other thing is the bottom contour. There’s no structure out here, so fish use the depth changes as highways or markers.

I use an Eagle Cuda model. It’s durable and the price point is right, $70 to $100. I pound on it too. We always have three- to four-foot surf.

I use a removable installation to save

on wear and tear. The battery goes inside my safety bag. The

wires run through the hull to the battery and transducer via a custom rubber grommet.

Not the way I fish. If I start fishing lakes, yes. I’m not fishing specific structure; I don’t need to go to a specific point.

Come experience the Yukon!
