SPECIALIST EQUIPMENT Preventing faults in automated processes W
here most operators in the minerals and aggregates industry use standard
automation products for components such as variable speed drives and soft-starts, there is a motor management control unit available that automatically detects errors before they become faults. Simocode is a fl exible and modular
motor control system for low-voltage motors. An increasingly essential tool in preventative maintenance, it functions independently of the controller and provides scaleable, fl exible solutions for all system confi gurations. One of Simocode Pro’s functions is to detect stop and start operations; it can therefore identify when a motor may be on when it should not be, and by monitoring current, voltage and power usage, it can in turn help reduce energy use.
Simocode brings a truly integrated solution with seamless communication to the control and automation
process. It also refl ects the increasing digitisation of condition monitoring and how safety, energy effi ciency and environmental considerations are being brought to the front of operations for companies such as Aggregate Industries. As Dave Brown, regional
electrical engineer for Aggregate Industries, explains: “We decided to use Simocode on a screening plant at one of our sites, and found we could install and programme it very quickly. We spent much less time coding, and our lead engineer was delighted with the results. The way the information is presented has been greatly enhanced, improving the reliability of communications and making remote diagnostics management much easier.“ Reducing engineering time and getting more useful, useable data out
of the system are key elements to selecting Simocode Pro.
Simocode has been used in the
water/waste and oil/gas industries for years and has been refi ned so that it helps provide a fully integrated solution, such as at Aggregate Industries‘ Torr Works, where it is monitoring currents and power consumption to help reduce energy use.

US company launches first aggregate screen S
uperior Industries, a US-based manufacturer of bulk material processing and handling systems, has announced completed R&D of its fi rst ever aggregate screen. Known as the Guardian Horizontal Screen, the triple-shaft, adjustable oval stroke design was engineered using valuable customer feedback.
According to the company, several
key features help distinguish the horizontal screen as a new processing solution for the aggregates industry. These include patent pending bottle jack lifting points that simplify and speed spring replacement and improve safety. A segmented belt guard and sectioned tailgate greatly lighten the loads of these two features, requiring only one person to remove and return the guards and gates during maintenance. New to the industry are

maintenance and hinges prevent operators from misplacing the spillage- preventing doors. A 100% fully-enclosed belt guard
ensures maximum safety while an integrated, onboard tensioner accelerates maintenance to the motor belt.
Superior designs and manufacturers its new Guardian Horizontal Screen in two and three deck confi gurations for 5x16, 6x16 6x20, 7x20 and 8x20 models. Each unit is equipped with spray bar knockout holes for wet processing applications.
