DATON FIX: Continued from page 30
points. I just have to get to my shots, win the scrambles and make my opponents wrestle.” There was a huge crowd in Times Square, and Fix was hyped
up when it was his turn to wrestle 2013 Cadet World bronze medalist Kheyrollah Ghahramani of Iran. He scored points from his feet, and had multiple turns on the mat, to secure a 14-3 technical fall. “My top game really opened things up. I got a turn after the
first takedown and I got three turns after that second takedown and it really opened the match up for me. Anytime you win you get confidence. I am confident that I am getting to my offense, getting my turns and that is really going to help me,” he said. The focus had to shift quickly to the UWW Junior World Team
Trials in Irving, Texas just three days later, where Fix would advance directly to the championship finals series based upon his national title in Las Vegas. His finals opponent was another top young star, Austin
Gomez of Illinois, who also has age-group World Championships experience. Fix continued his offensive tear against Gomez, winning both of his matches with 10-0 technical falls. Fix was dominant on his feet and from the top position, where he scored multiple turns on Gomez. “I felt I wrestled really good. I got to my shots and I got some
turns that first match. He did a good job defending my top game that second match. He is the kind of wrestler you have to be careful wrestling. He is a big move guy. You have to stay solid against those kind of guys,” he said. Now the focus is on the rest of the world, and Fix is up to the challenge. “I want to win a World title. Now I am going up a division. It’s
going to be a lot tougher. I have to work on my leg defense more. I have got to get to my shots better. I have good shots, I just have to get my set ups going and get to my finishes,” he said. Fix believes he will be much better this time than last time, because of his hard work as well as what he learned last year at the Cadet Worlds. “I think I am a lot better. Myself from this year would beat
myself from last year and that’s a good thing. I believe I am a lot better. I have been in the room working and I am getting better every day,” he said. The match that stopped him from winning the Cadet World
title last year was a 3-2 quarterfinals loss to Abasgadzhi Magomedov of Russia. He has taken that setback as a chance to learn. “I learned don’t leave the match in the ref’s hands. I was lead-
ing the match with 15 seconds left in the quarterfinals. He had me in a two-on-one, and I was fighting off the two-on-one and they called it fleeing the hold. It gave the match to the Russian. So, don’t leave the match in the ref’s hands,” he said. His win against the tough Iranian opponent in New York will
give Fix a good measuring stick for where he is now and where he needs to go to achieve his goals. “Anytime you can go beat one of those top-level countries is awesome. It was an awesome thing to do. What really matters is what I do at the World Championships,” he said. Fix is looking for another chance to put his great offensive
skills on display. When he is wrestling well, Fix can score points in bunches. He understands what fuels his ability to score when things are going good. “Move my hands and move my feet. That is what starts my
offense. I am doing a good job of keeping guys off my legs. In the past, I’ve let guys onto my legs a little too easy. I have been trying to improve on that,” he said.
