World News Ryanair boosts Irish tourism

Ryanair’s figures show it delivered 70% of all traffic growth at Irish airports Cork, Dublin, Knock and Shannon in 2015, according to the airline. And it expects 2016 to be an equally successful year. With more than 130 routes to and from Ireland, Ryanair will carry 14 million-plus customers through Irish airports in the next 12 months with new routes including Dublin to Amsterdam, Athens and Copenhagen

The Irish decision of finance minister

Michael Noonan to scrap air travel tax in April 2014 has been an important factor in air traffic and tourism growth. “After five years of decline at Irish airports, the welcome repeal of the air travel tax has resulted in record traffic and tourism growth, demonstrating to our counterparts in the UK and

Germany the enormous economic benefits removing Air Passenger Duty brings,” said Ryanair’s Robin Kiely. “Ryanair will continue to invest in

our network and we look forward to welcoming more and more visitors to Ireland on Ryanair’s low fare services.”

Pulkovo offers enhanced programme of incentives

Northern Capital Gateway LLC, operator of Pulkovo Airport Saint Petersburg, has a new Route Development Regulation, effective from November 2015. “The upgraded and enhanced incentive programme serves multiple purposes,” said Eveniy Ilyin, CCO of Northern Capital Gateway. “It contributes to the network expansions and maintenance of the unique existing destinations in the route network of Pulkovo airport.

“It gives an impetus for new airlines to come to Saint Petersburg and promotes the development of transfer as well as long-haul traffic at the airport. I am certain that the new opportunities offered at Pulkovo will spark the interest of both domestic and foreign carriers.”

The programme simplifies the eligibility criteria for existing bonuses and introduces new discounts off relevant tariffs. The bonuses apply to take-off/

landing and terminal use charges and the discount rates range from 5%-60%. The requirements for the minimum frequency of new routes have been lowered from two to one flight per week for international airlines and three to two per week for domestic and Commonwealth of Independent States airlines.

In addition, discounts on charges are now available to airlines recovering unique routes from Pulkovo. This applies to recommencing flights to a destination that has not been served on a regular basis for at least 90 days, but for less than 365 days. A unique destination is one that is served by a single carrier.

The Route Development Regulation at Pulkovo Airport was first introduced in May 2011. Detailed information regarding the terms and conditions of the incentive programme, as well as specific bonus rates for the airlines, are available at pulkovoairport.ru/partners/ airlines/motivation

Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa join forces

Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa – both Star Alliance members – have formed a strategic partnership that will include joint ventures on key routes between Asia and Europe. The partnership will also cover the subsidiary carriers SilkAir, Austrian and Swiss.

The wide-ranging agreement includes a significant expansion in codeshares and a comprehensive commercial deal. In all, there will be 20 new codeshare routes and plans call for further codeshare ties in the future. The two carriers will share revenue on flights from Singapore to Frankfurt, Munich and Zurich. The new Singapore Airlines flight to Dusseldorf – beginning in July 2016 – will also be covered by the agreement.

Where possible, the carriers are coordinating schedules to ensure the most convenient connections for passengers. Joint fare promotions, an alignment of corporate programmes and better integration of the respective frequent-flyer schemes are also on the agenda. While some of the work will generate

immediate benefits, other projects will be rolled out later in 2016 as regulatory approval is obtained.

“We are very pleased to have reached agreement for this extensive partnership, which will bring about significant benefits to consumers through enhanced connections and more codeshare destinations,” said Goh Choon Phong, CEO of Singapore Airlines. “Singapore Airlines has had longstanding ties to Lufthansa, which is an ideal partner with an excellent network and strong customer focus. This is yet another example of how partnerships can result in more for our customers, as we can jointly provide benefits that we would not otherwise be able to provide on our own.”
