Sparrowk gave decades of support
and leadership to a number of Baptist institutions. She was president of Northern California
Baptist Churches in 1964,
president of American Baptist International Ministries in 1977 and 1978 and president of American Baptist Churches (ABC) USA in 1978 and 1979. Sparrowk served as a trustee of Eastern University and Eastern Theological
Seminary (now Palmer
José Leovegildo Caetano Gonçalves, former president of the Portuguese Baptist Convention (PBC) and the European Baptist
Federation (EBF), died on
November 26, 2015, after a long illness. He was 84 years old.
Born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1931, he migrated with his family to Brazil at age eight where he made his profession of faith. In 1947, he became a volunteer with the Board of National Mission of the Brazilian Baptist Convention. Gonçalves was an active participant evangelistic crusades in prisons and
in
hospitals and was a youth and student leader in his local church. In 1948, he moved to Rio de Janeiro but returned to Portugal in 1952 and gained secular employment. Responding to the call to full time ministry, Gonçalves enrolled
ordained
in the International Baptist Theological Seminary in Rüschlikon, Switzerland, in 1957. He was ordained to the Christian ministry in Portugal in 1962, becoming pastor of Cedofeita Baptist Church in Porto.
Gonçalves was elected president of the
PBC in 1964, serving until 1968. He was elected president again in 1971 for another three years. He became vice president of the EBF from 1972-1974 and president from 1974-1976.
He is a past member of the Baptist
World Alliance Executive Committee, the Commission on Cooperative Christianity and the Commission on Bible Study and Membership Training.
Gonçalves was instrumental in the
launching of Campus Crusade for Christ, Portugal (now Agape Portugal) and was a chief organizer and planner for “Here is Life, Portugal” in 1981, and “Expo 85” in 1985.
During the 1990s, the Gonçalves family served as missionaries in South Africa and Mozambique for approximately 10 years.

Cora Sparrowk, a former vice president and longtime supporter of the Baptist World Alliance, died on January
Henrietta Williams, an employee of
the Baptist World Alliance from 1993- 1996, died on February 9 in Phoenix, Arizona, in the United States. She was 70 years old. An ordained minister, Williams was
associate minister of the Berean Bible Church in Phoenix at the time of her passing.
She previously served at the New
Home Baptist Church and was a past officer in the Central District Association Congress of Christian Education. While at the BWA, she worked in the Division on Promotion and Development.
Funeral service was held at Bethesda Community Baptist Church on February 13 and interment at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona. She leaves husband, Tommie, son, Jerome, and daughters, Shellye and Louise.

“Sparrowk was a Baptist leader who intelligence
and intellectual
rigor,” said BWA General Secretary Neville Callam. “In her relationships, she served up a rare blend of graciousness and honesty. Her commitment to the BWA vision was unquestionable and her service toward that end was exemplary.” She has been recognized for her commitment,
service and leadership,
receiving an Honorary Doctor of Divinity from American Baptist Seminary of the West in 1978, the Valiant Woman Award in 1984 from Church Women United and an International Woman of the Year recognition in 1992. Sparrowk was named as a Who’s Who
in Religion and was mentioned in the Women’s Book of World Records and Achievements. The

President’s Award, an honor conferred by ABC USA, was named in her honor and that of her late husband, John, who died in 2004.
Sparrowk is survived by son, Jack, and daughter, Jill.
