IS YOUR VEHICLE READY?
CAR TROUBLES CAN DETOUR YOUR ROAD TRIP PLANS. MINIMIZE THE ODDS BY GIVING YOUR VEHICLE A LITTLE PRE-TRIP TIME AND ATTENTION, INSIDE AND OUT, FROM A PROFESSIONAL OR YOURSELF.
STEP 1: TUNE IT UP
Inspect tires—including the spare—and properly infl ate them. Tuck a quarter into the tread in several spots. If the space above Washington’s head shows, it’s new-tire time.
Check and change or top off needed fl uids, including oil, coolant and wiper.
Examine hoses and belts for cracks and excessive wear. Replace as necessary.
Make sure your battery connection is tight and corrosion-free.
Check that lights, signals and wiper blades work properly. Replace as necessary.
Have a mechanic assess pulls, pings or knocks. STEP 2: CLEAN IT UP
Remove everything from the inside. Vacuum the interior, and wipe it down with cleaning spray and a microfi ber cloth. Use a targeted cleaner on leather trim and carpet stains. Neatly replace only what you need for your trip.
Wash your car in the shade using car wash (not dish) soap and a natural sponge or lambs-wool mitt. Towel- dry. Follow with wax for extra protection and shine.
Don’t forget the fl oor mats. Power-wash the rubber versions. Use a carpet cleaning machine for the carpeted versions.
Clean windows and mirrors, inside and out. Tip: Spray cleaner on the rag, not the window. No overspray!
Add a small car cleanup kit, plus a designated bin or bag to keep road trip trash accumulation to a minimum. Empty it at every pit stop.
TAKE A BACKSEAT A pet in the passenger seat, even in a crate, could get hurt if the airbag deploys.
HEAD IN You know that quintessential image of an open- mouthed dog with its head out the car window? Don’t let your pet do that. Fast-traveling debris could cause eye, mouth or head injury.
STAY TOGETHER Don’t leave your pet alone in the vehicle, ever. It can turn dangerously hot quickly, even on 70ºF days with the windows open.
