As the old slaves used to say, ‘plenty good room, plenty good

room in my Father’s kingdom.’ And there will always be room and not just room— a real place for all of us.

On to greater unity

Drawing on 50 years of national and international dialogue, Luther- ans and Catholics on Oct. 30 made available “Declaration on the Way: Church, Ministry and Eucharist,” an ecumenical document that marks a pathway toward greater unity between Catholics and Lutherans. At its heart are 32 “Statements of Agreement” where Lutherans and Catholics already have points of con- vergence on topics about church, ministry and the eucharist. The doc- ument also indicates differences that remain.

7th church fire in Mo.

On Oct. 21, a seventh church in St. Louis was the latest in a rash of arson fires that had been directed predom- inantly at African-American congre- gations. But the Shrine of St. Joseph on the outskirts of downtown, in what’s known as Columbus Square, is predominantly white and Roman Catholic, dating back to 1843. Dam- age at the churches ranged from zero to nearly destroyed. One was Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod.

Rewards totaling $9,000 are being offered for information that leads to the arrest of those responsible for the string of church fires in a two-week span beginning Oct. 8. “This isn’t a

north city problem, it’s not a North County problem,” said Capt. Garon Mosby of the St. Louis Fire Depart- ment. “It’s a St. Louis problem.”
