Solidarity with refugees
In September, ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton called on members of the church to remain in “prayerful solidarity” in response to a refugee crisis in the Middle East that has overflowed into Europe. At presstime thousands of refugees, pri- marily from Syria, were crossing the border from Serbia to Hungary daily. “Remembering that our Lord was once a refugee, we are called to wel- come the stranger and recognize that protection, hospitality and respect for the stranger are deeply rooted in all major faith traditions,” Eaton said.
College changes name
Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., has become Augustana Univer- sity, a decision made by the school’s trustees. In a letter to students and alumni, Augustana President Robert C. Oliver wrote that the new name speaks of the school’s leadership and advancements: “We feel the name Augustana University reflects our growing number of programs and centers for both undergraduate and
Young Reformers meet in Wittenberg

Some 140 Lutheran young adults from more than 80 member churches of the Lutheran World Federation met Aug. 23-Sept. 4 in Wittenberg, Germany, for the network’s inaugural conference. The network aims to help young people from the communion become contemporary reformers. In anticipation of the 500th anniver- sary of the Reformation in 2017, the ELCA churchwide organization will host its first-ever Grace Gathering Aug. 10-13, 2016, in New Orleans. The event is open to all ELCA m em b er s and o t he r s and will run concurrent with the 2016 ELCA Churchwide Assembly.
